"My first visit to Baphumelele in 2007 meant a big reset in my concept of “important”. When I asked what could I bring along to make these kids happy the answer was concise: “bring creamy cheeses or oranges, we barely manage to feed them meat once a week, those will be big luxuries”. All of a sudden blackberry appointments or impatient clients looked like very awkward problems to me. Do you know why little babies in the orphanage don’t cry when they’re alone in their cradle? Because they’re aware no mother arms will run at once to lift them; and yet, kids in Baphumelele are always smiling and grateful. My son regrets that visit to the township… ever since I came back I work hard to make him conscious of the privileged life he has and we often speak about these kids. Not only they changed my life, they also help my son be a better person." — Olga Navarro, Site International Conference 2010 Chair
Giving back to the community is always important and the Site International Conference 2010 is reinstating a charity event. Baphumelele Orphanage started with one abandoned kid left at the house door of Rosalia (Rosie) Mashale. Nowadays, Baphumelele gives shelter to 182 kids permanently plus 300 that come for the day.
